The Endpapers:

Blank Endpapers

Beginning in 1930 when the series debuted, the endpapers for volume #'s 1-7 were blank, as pictured above on the left. Only the first printing of volume #7, The Clue in the Diary, was issued in this format, so it is very hard to find indeed. Not quite the same, but similar are the glossy flashlight picture covers which also have blank endpapers.

Orange Silhouette Endpapers

The orange silhouette endpapers began to be used around 1932 and continued until around 1947. These are pictured above to the right. These can be found in volume #'s 1-23 and perhaps in scattered first and very early printings of volume #'s 24 and 25. Collectors know it is their favorite girl sleuth on the right looking through the magnifying glass, however there is friendly debate on who the 3 girls are on the left endpaper. Some would like to think it is Bess, George, and Helen Corning--as all were prominent as Nancy's chums. And that is entirely possible, as all three characters had been introduced by the time these endpapers were introduced beginning with volume #7, The Clue in the Diary.

Maroon Dana Girls Endpapers

The maroon Dana Girls endpapers shown at left where the two girls are examining a note in a hallway at the top of the stairs, were used for very few printings and found in the following volumes circa 1947 printings--#'s 3-7, 9, 12, 14, and 18. (It is possible they might exist for #'s 1-2, 8, 10-11, 13, 15-17, and 19-24--if anyone has these volumes with these endpapers, let us all know!)

Blue Silhouette Endpapers

The blue silhouette endpapers were issued around 1947 and were used through the rarer first printing of volume #30, The Clue of the Velvet Mask in 1953. Only the first printing of Velvet Mask has these endpapers so it makes this printing much more valuable.

Digger Endpapers

The common digger endpapers are a take off on two volumes. Volume #6, The Secret of Red Gate Farm's second cover art by Bill Gillies, features Nancy peering around a tree watching members of the Black Snake Colony. Volume #9, The Sign of the Twisted Candles, second cover art by Bill Gillies, features Nancy watching villain Frank Semitt digging outside near a barn. The diggers are a combination of Nancy and the tree from Red Gate Farm and Frank Semitt digging from Twisted Candles.

Blue Multi-Scene Endpapers I & II

The blue multi-scene endpapers--I shown at left above and II shown at right above--are 22 little illustrations from the different volumes. The blue multi-scene I endpapers are the less common version--only used for one print run mainly and possibly another or two. They are a white and dark blue picture on a medium blue background. The more common blue-multi II endpapers were used from around 1959 up until 1974 or 1975. They are white and dark blue drawings on a more grayish-blue background.

The other difference besides color in the two versions is that they are cut differently. If you break up the endpapers into four rows going across, it is as if each row moved down one from their positions in blue multi-scene I to the blue multi-scene II.

In a breakdown of the scenes in the blue multi-scene II endpapers, the 22 little scenes are from the following volumes:

  • top row, left to right: #'s 9, 11, 20, 1, 5, and 35
  • 2nd row, left to right: #'s 29, 24, 31, 14, 25, and 23
  • 3rd row, left to right: #'s 7, 13, 30, 3, and 17
  • bottom row, left to right: #'s 2, 34, 6, 4, and 26

The table below makes a breakdown of which cover art the little scenes are modeled after:

Also, interesting to note, is that these are not exact copies from the actual cover art--they are re-drawn. They look very similar and are the exact same action going on. The one exception is #11, The Clue of the Broken Locket, in which the scene used is not on any of the cover art--only two girls are pictured. All of the cover art to Broken Locket have 3 girls pictured--Nancy, Bess, & George.

White Multi I & II Endpapers

The white multi-scene endpapers--I shown at left above and II shown at right above--are 22 for I and 15 for II--little illustrations from the different volumes. The white multi-scene I endpapers were not in print as long as the II's. They are a white and black copy of the blue multi-scene II endpapers. The white multi-scene I endpapers were used from around 1962 up until 1969 or so. The white multi-scene II endpapers were introduced in about 1969 and used until about 1982. You can refer to the break down above under the blue multi-scene II endpapers for the different art for the white multi-scene I endpapers.

In a breakdown of the scenes in the white multi-scene II endpapers, the 15 scenes are from the following volumes:

  • top row, left to right: #'s 43, 46, 1, 27, and 28
  • 2nd row, left to right: #'s 3, 9, 25, 29, 45, and 42
  • bottom row, left to right: #'s 39, 4, 38, and 26

The table below makes a breakdown of which cover art the white multi-scenes II are modeled after:

Also, interesting to note, in comparison to the blue multi-scene endpapers I & II and the white multi-scene I endpapers, the white multi-scene II endpapers are more near an exact replica of the cover art. Same exact scenes, however some subtle differences in the art from the covers in expressions or faces.

Double Oval Endpapers

The double oval endpapers were introduced around 1982 and used through 1987. These are modeled after Nancy from the 2nd cover art by Bill Gillies to volume #6, The Secret of Red Gate Farm. The symbol of Nancy peering around a tree is used.

The following table is a breakdown of which volumes had the various endpapers shown above:
